OET Speaking practice: role-plays that feel like the ward
OET Speaking takes about 20 minutes: a short warm-up conversation, then two five-minute role-plays in your profession. You play yourself — the health professional — while the interlocutor plays a patient, client or carer. You get three minutes to prepare each scenario from a role card.

How OET Speaking is assessed
Assessors mark two things at once. Linguistic criteria cover intelligibility, fluency, appropriateness of language and grammar/expression resources. Clinical communication criteria cover the professional skills inside the conversation: building the relationship, understanding the patient’s perspective, structuring the consultation, and giving information effectively.
That second half is what surprises candidates: excellent English with a poor bedside manner underscores. Checking understanding, signposting what happens next, and responding to the patient’s concerns are scored behaviours.

Who do I speak to in the real exam?
A trained interlocutor who plays the patient, client or carer in both role-plays. The interlocutor is not the assessor — recordings are scored afterwards by trained assessors.
Is Speaking different for each profession?
Yes. A nurse gets nursing scenarios, a vet gets veterinary ones. The interaction skills being assessed are the same across professions.
What matters more — grammar or communication?
Both are marked. The clinical communication criteria (relationship-building, structure, information-giving) carry real weight, which is why fluent speakers can still underperform if they lecture rather than converse.
Can AI practice really prepare me for a live role-play?
It builds the parts that fail under pressure: thinking in your profession’s English, structuring the consultation, and speaking for five minutes without drying up. Many candidates combine our unlimited AI practice with an occasional live mock.
