How to approach Line Graph

The key skill is summarising movement rather than reading out every point. Group the lines that behave similarly and lead with the biggest overall change in your overview.

  1. 1Spot the overall trendSee which lines rise, fall or stay flat across the whole period.
  2. 2Write a movement overviewSummarise the main changes without specific numbers.
  3. 3Group similar linesDescribe lines that move together in the same sentence.
  4. 4Use varied trend verbsMix rose, climbed, fell and levelled off with adverbs like sharply and gradually.
  5. 5Anchor with key figuresQuote start, end and any peak or low to support the trend.

Common mistakes to avoid

Describing every year in turn.
Group the movement into clear phases or trends.
Repeating increased again and again.
Vary your verbs and adverbs of change.
No overview of the overall movement.
Open with a one sentence summary of the main trends.

What tense do I use for a line graph?
Match the tense to the time frame. Past data uses the past tense; a forecast into the future uses will or is expected to.
How many figures should I include?
Enough to support each trend you describe, usually the start, end and any peak or low, not every data point.
How accurate is the AI band?
Your essay is graded against the four official IELTS Writing criteria with quoted evidence for each point. Treat it as a reliable practice estimate to track progress, not an official IELTS result.
Is Writing practice free?
Your first Writing test is free to attempt and your band is shown. The detailed report with corrections and a model answer is a small fee per report, or unlimited with Pro. Reading and Listening practice are always free.
