How to approach Pie Chart

Lead with the biggest slice in your overview and group the smaller ones. When there are two pie charts, compare how the proportions shift between them.

  1. 1Rank the slicesOrder the segments from largest to smallest.
  2. 2Write a proportion overviewState which category dominates and which is smallest.
  3. 3Group small slicesCombine minor segments rather than listing each one.
  4. 4Use fraction languageMix a third, a quarter, just over half, and a small proportion.
  5. 5Compare across chartsIf there are two pies, describe how the shares change.
