PTE Reading practice: five task types, one clock
PTE Reading gives you roughly half an hour for five task types — and unlike IELTS, the section runs on one shared clock, so time lost on an early re-order paragraph is stolen from every question after it.
Our bank covers all five formats in their real on-screen mechanics — drag-and-drop, dropdowns, multi-select — with instant marking and accuracy tracked per type.
The five task types
Because the reading-and-writing fill-in-the-blanks feeds two communicative scores, it is the single most valuable reading format to drill. The multi-select items punish guessing with negative marking — accuracy discipline matters more than coverage.
| Task | Mechanic | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Reading & writing: fill in the blanks | Dropdown menus inside a text | Cross-scored with writing — the heaviest single reading task |
| Multiple choice, multiple answers | Tick several options | Negative marking: wrong ticks subtract, so never guess extras |
| Re-order paragraphs | Drag jumbled paragraphs into order | Find the standalone opener first, then chain pronouns and connectors |
| Reading: fill in the blanks | Drag words from a bank into gaps | Collocation knowledge beats grammar rules here |
| Multiple choice, single answer | Pick one option | Low weight — never burn re-order time to perfect these |
How our practice works
- Every format in its genuine interaction style, not simplified into flat multiple choice.
- Instant marking with explanations, including why each distractor fails.
- Per-type accuracy tracking to expose which of the five formats is capping your score.
- Timed sets that teach the pacing the shared clock demands.

Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in PTE Reading?
Only on multiple-choice-multiple-answer items: each wrong selection subtracts a point within the item (never below zero). Tick only what you are sure of.
How much time per question?
The part runs on one shared clock of roughly 30 minutes for around 13–18 items. A common budget is about two minutes per re-order or multi-select and under a minute for single-answer items.
What is the best way to improve re-order paragraphs?
Practise finding the topic sentence — the one paragraph that makes sense with no context — then chain references: pronouns, articles and connectors that must follow something already said.
Are these real Pearson questions?
No — every item is an original work written in the published format. Official practice materials are sold at pearsonpte.com.
