How to approach Form Completion

Part 1 is a transactional conversation, so the answers are concrete details. Names are usually spelled out and numbers are said clearly, so train your ear for both.

  1. 1Read the form firstSee what each field needs, such as a surname, a phone number or an address.
  2. 2Listen for spelled out namesSurnames and place names are often spelled aloud, so write the letters as they come.
  3. 3Catch numbers carefullyPhone numbers, prices and dates are common, and a single wrong digit loses the mark.
  4. 4Watch for correctionsSpeakers sometimes change a detail, so the second number or name is usually the answer.
  5. 5Use the word limitKeep answers within the stated limit and do not add words that are not needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

Writing the first number when the speaker corrects it.
Listen to the end of the sentence and take the corrected detail.
Guessing the spelling of a name.
Write the letters exactly as they are spelled aloud.
Adding the currency or unit when it is already printed.
Write only what the gap needs, since symbols are often already there.

Why are names spelled out?
Part 1 tests whether you can record details accurately, so names and places are spelled aloud. Write each letter as you hear it and read it back.
What if the speaker changes a number?
Take the corrected number. Speakers often give a wrong detail and then correct it, and the final version is the answer.
Do I write the currency symbol?
Only if it is not already on the form. If the form shows the symbol, write the number alone.
Is form completion free to practice?
Yes. You can practice unlimited Listening questions free with instant band scores and explanations.
