How to approach Multiple Choice

Multiple choice is common in Parts 2 and 3. The answer is almost always a paraphrase, and the wrong options are named on purpose, so listen for what is confirmed rather than just mentioned.

  1. 1Read the question and optionsKnow the three choices before the relevant part of the recording.
  2. 2Listen for confirmationThe correct option is the one the speaker actually agrees with, not just mentions.
  3. 3Expect distractorsWrong options are usually named and then ruled out, so do not pick the first one you hear.
  4. 4Follow the paraphraseThe right answer rewords the option, so match meaning rather than the exact words.
  5. 5Commit and move onChoose, then refocus for the next question rather than second guessing.

Common mistakes to avoid

Picking an option just because you heard its words.
Choose the option the speaker confirms, not the one merely mentioned.
Answering before the speaker finishes.
Wait, since speakers often reject an option before giving the real one.
Matching exact words instead of meaning.
The answer is a paraphrase, so follow the meaning.

Why do I hear all three options?
The recording names every option on purpose. Two are distractors that are mentioned and then ruled out, so listen for the one the speaker actually confirms.
Is the answer the same words as the option?
Rarely. The correct option is paraphrased in the recording, so you have to match meaning rather than wait for identical words.
Where does multiple choice appear?
Most often in Parts 2 and 3. Part 3 is a discussion, so opinions can shift before the speakers settle on an answer.
Is it free to practice?
Yes. Listening multiple choice practice is free and unlimited with an explanation on every question.
