How to approach Map Labelling

Map tasks are common in Part 2, a monologue about a place or facility. Orient yourself with the entrance or a fixed point first, then move with the speaker.

  1. 1Find your starting pointLocate the entrance or a labelled feature so you have a reference.
  2. 2Learn the direction wordsListen for ahead, opposite, beyond, on your left and similar phrases.
  3. 3Move with the speakerTrace the route on the map as the description unfolds.
  4. 4Match each feature to a letterAs a place is described, mark the letter for that position.
  5. 5Keep your orientationRemember the speaker may turn, so left and right can change.

Common mistakes to avoid

Losing your place on the map.
Keep a finger on the current position as the speaker moves.
Confusing left and right after a turn.
Reset your orientation whenever the speaker changes direction.
Waiting for the name instead of the location.
Follow the directions, since the position is what you label.
