How to approach Table Completion

Tables usually compare options such as courses, times or prices. The recording moves across the table in a predictable order, so use the row and column labels to stay in place.

  1. 1Map the table firstRead the row and column headings so you know what each gap is comparing.
  2. 2Track the orderThe speaker usually works through the table row by row, so follow that path.
  3. 3Predict each gapDecide whether a gap needs a day, a price or a name before you hear it.
  4. 4Listen past the distractorTimes and prices are often ruled out before the correct one is given.
  5. 5Stay within the word limitWrite only what is needed and keep within the stated number of words.

Common mistakes to avoid

Losing track of which row the speaker is on.
Follow the headings and keep your eyes on the current row.
Writing the first time or price you hear.
Wait for the final detail, since the first is often a distractor.
Exceeding the word limit.
Count the words allowed and answer briefly.

How is a table different from notes?
A table organises answers into rows and columns, so you must track two dimensions at once. The listening skill is the same as note completion.
Do answers follow the table order?
Usually yes. Speakers tend to move across the table in a set order, so use the layout to predict what comes next.
What word limit applies?
Read the instruction. It is often one word and or a number, so keep answers short and within the limit.
Can I practice this free?
Yes. Listening practice is unlimited and free, with answers explained and an instant band score.
